Las Vegas Power Outage Causes Chaos As Flights Delayed at Harry Reid International Airport
Reports indicate that the Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas Strip and Allegiant Stadium were among the sites in Las Vegas affected by a power outage on Monday.
Two interruptions were also observed at Harry Reid International Airport. Power was lost at Terminal 3 of the airport around 3:23 p.m. on Monday.
It was fixed after 5 p.m. A generator supplied restricted temporary electricity at the airport, yet numerous public areas stayed unlit.
Another airport outage allegedly occurred later in the day.
A nearby utility provider, NV Energy, dispatched its emergency teams to the airport. Repairs completed, power gradually resumed, as reported by Las Vegas TV station KVVU.
Tram Affected, Flights Postponed
The tram operation for Terminal 3 at the airport was halted. Rides were provided to passengers on buses, as reported by Las Vegas TV station KTNV.
Furthermore, every C gate in Terminal 1 of the airport experienced a power loss.
KVVU reported that the airport disclosed that certain flights experienced slight delays after the doors to boarding areas lost power. Doors automatically lock when the power fails in this manner at the airport.
Officials stated that the airport's power was restored to normal by around 8 p.m.
On Monday evening, NV Energy informed KVVU that an unsuccessful copper wire theft at an unnamed substation resulted in 12 customers losing power, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. NV Energy did not identify the customers who lost power.
As of Monday night, the report stated that no one had been arrested for the vandalism.
This wasn’t the initial occurrence of wire thefts and associated vandalism causing utility outages.
Substations See Vandalism
“NV Energy facilities — particularly substations — are often a target for copper theft, although we also see this type of theft on power poles,” the utility said in a statement to Las Vegas TV station KSNV.
“Copper thefts are growing more sophisticated, with thieves finding workarounds to avoid being shocked or more seriously injured during theft.”
In 2024, NV Energy announced that it “redoubled efforts to guarantee all suspected copper thefts are reported to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department." Our teams implement measures and strive to guarantee that our facilities are safe and not easily reachable by possible intruders.
After the disruption at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, patrons received a $25 gift card, according to KSNV.
